Federal Solar Battery Rebate Launches July 1, 2025
The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program starts July 1, 2025, offering upfront discounts on home battery systems for households, small businesses, and community facilities.
This federal solar battery rebate aims to cut battery costs by around 30%, with estimated savings between $3,630 – $7,860 on standard systems.
Part of a $2.3 billion expansion of the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), the rebate provides up to $372 per usable kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery storage.
After admin fees, the effective discount is expected to be around $330 per kWh. Like the solar panel rebate, the battery subsidy will gradually reduce until it ends in 2030.
The scheme is uncapped, meaning there’s no limit on the number of rebates available. Systems installed before July 1, 2025, may still qualify — as long as they’re not switched on until after the program starts.
Eligibility Requirements:
Battery systems must be between 5 kWh and 50 kWh usable capacity
Must be Clean Energy Council-approved
Installed by accredited installers
Must be able to connect to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) (participation optional)
Can be stacked with existing state battery rebates
Available to all eligible properties, with one rebate per property
This rebate could make battery storage financially viable for many Australians, supporting the installation of over one million batteries by 2030.
