The hidden cost of solar you often aren’t told about

The final cost of a solar installation is connecting the system to the grid.

This is a transaction between the householder and SA Power Networks and not the responsibility of the solar installer. However, any reputable solar system salesman will bring this cost into early discussions with a client.

Others won’t mention it or gloss over the possible figure involved. The reason? It can add more than $500 to the total system cost.

How come? Connecting solar to the grid usually means changing your existing electricity meter to a digital import-export unit. This measures the energy you take from the grid and the amount your solar system exports to the grid, after satisfying the demand within your premises.

If you already have a suitable meter, SA Power Networks will charge you to have it re-programmed to suit solar. If you need a completely new meter you have the option of a single-phase or three-phase depending on your situation.

We are always upfront about this cost, and how it will affect your installation quote.
