Lost your FiT? The No-Brainer solution:
Don’t lose hope because there is an easy way to take the first step back to recovering those dollars. And if that isn’t good enough news, how about this? It can also apply to people without solar who are desperate to reduce those crippling household energy bills.
The solution is a heat pump electric storage hot water system.
Our consultants are proving that a typical household with a 1.5kW to 3kW system which has just lost the FiT’s original rate can claw back significant savings with one of our heat pump options. The annual running costs could be less than $120.
Older electric and gas-powered storage systems are the most expensive way to heat water. Having a rooftop solar system earning FiT often masked this fact.
By contrast, the latest heat pumps cost one third as much to run plus can earn some of the last remaining government rebates. How good is that?
How does a heat pump work? In simple terms it operates in the reverse to a refrigerator. Heat in the air outside the unit is transferred to the water stored inside through a heat exchange system. A heat pump produces up to five times as much heating as the electricity required to power it.
The technology is so good that it only requires the typically reliable sunshine that South Australia gets. So it’s a no-brainer solution for our State.
More good news is that heat pumps are an easy replacement option for electric or gas hot water heaters as they can be fitted to the existing plumbing. They also come with a 10-year warranty.
Those without solar panels can save up to $1000 a year on running costs simply by converting to a heat pump. Running a heat pump without solar can cost around $500 a year to heat 200 litres of water, compared to around $1100 for gas and $1500 for electricity. Adding solar panels brings it down to less than $120. It really is a no-brainer.
